2001 Photos - The Parade
A highlight of the group's visit was the Columbus Day Parade, a New York tradition since 1929. For a while, it was touch and go as to whether the parade would go on as planned in the city still reeling from the September 11 attacks, but as the event got underway at noon on October 8, Mayor Rudy Giuliani said, "This demonstrates that we're going ahead with our lives. We're not going to let terrorism hinder us."
Led by Portland's Mayor Vera Katz, hundreds of Freedom Fliers donned their "Oregon Loves NY" tee shirts and marched along Fifth Avenue to the cheers and delight of onlookers. In a spontaneous and symbolic gesture of love and support for their fellow countrymen, Freedom Fliers literally gave the shirts off their backs to New Yorkers who lined the streets ten deep.
