2001 Photos - Memorials

One of the first stops for Freedom Fliers after arriving in New York was a visit to Union Square on Sunday, October 7, to pay their respects at what had become a makeshift citizens’ memorial. Many participated in ecumenical services conducted by Oregon Faith Community, followed by the laying of a remembrance wreath by Portland Mayor Vera Katz and Eugene Mayor James Torrey. The ceremony was led by Portland community leader Bruce Samson, with remarks delivered by Baruty Artharee, deptuy director of the Portland Development Commission. Violin music was provided by Roy Stilwell. Hearts were heavy as everyone tried to come to grips with the reality of the devastation and the horror of what had happened September 11.
